We love our apartment, but it lacks sunlight! This is an issue for motivation, seasonal depression and keeping houseplants alive! Some plants do pretty well, some not so much. And now that we have a cat, who we swear wants to become vegan, we have to keep all our plants out of reach or they become lunch.

We were asked to try Plaid’s new Mod Podge Ultra, which is basically a super powerful all-in-one Mod Podge spray. We decided to put it to the test and make a felt snake plant that wont die of lack of sunlight or a curious cat! Mod Podge Ultra is also nontoxic, so that’s a win for the cat too! Snake plants have really tall stiff straight leaves, we wanted to mimic that by stiffening the felt with the Ultra.

Why we love this craft:

  • No special skills needed

  • Everything’s easy to cut out

  • Lots of steps, but is repetitive

  • Perfect craft to do while binge watching

Materials

  • Mod Podge Ultra

  • Felt

  • Acrylic Paint

  • Yarn

  • Terracotta Pot

  • Cardboard

  • Sand

  • Scissors

  • Pencil

  • Craft Blade

  • Glue Gun

Cut out the leaves-With fabric scissors cut out about 15-20 snake plant leaves from felt.

Stiffen the leaves-Protect the surface you’re working on by laying out leaves on a tarp or large piece of paper. Shake Ultra and spray all the leaves. Let dry, flip and spray the other side. Repeat this process until each side has been coated twice.

Decorate the pot– Pour a little Ultra into a small dish and soak long pieces of different colored yarn then wrap them around the pot. Manipulate until the yarn is lined up nicely and let dry.

Paint the leaves– With a small flat brush and light green acrylic paint add small horizontal strokes on both sides of the leaves. Lightly paint the edges of the leaves with yellow acrylic paint. Let dry.

Prep the pot- Trace the mouth of the pot onto a piece of cardboard. Cut out slightly smaller than the traced circle so it fits tightly into the pot. With a craft knife cut out three wide slits pointing into the center. Fill Pot with crumpled up paper to help fill the empty space.

Create leaf bouquets- Gather three bunches of five or so leaves with the longest in the middle and shorter ones on both sides.

Plant- Pinch the bottom of the bunched leaves together and poke through one of the cut slits of the cardboard round. Hot glue the bottom of the stems for added stability. Once done glue the cardboard round to the inside of the pot.

Add sand and finish- Add a layer of sand to cover the cardboard completely. Glue down the sand by spraying with a good coat of Ultra. Spray the whole pot with Ultra to cover up any blemishes from the Ultra and to give it a cohesive look!

Enjoy- Forever and ever!!

If this craft feels too time consuming, we understand! Sometimes, you just want a craft that’s easy and we know this project has a lot of steps! If you can find really stiff felt, you can skip spraying the leaves with the Ultra all together!

We have the whole tutorial on YouTube with a special appearance with our cat, Teddy!

That really is brilliant. We have a real snake plant and it’s doing very well – too well, it’s almost too big for it’s space! When i finally have to move it I need to remember that I can make a replacement 🙂

My youngest teen loves plants, but always forgets to take care of them. This would be a great project for her to make and display in her room.
