Dyeing Old Clothes With Rit

by Crafty Lumberjacks

We’re the type of people who will wear the same clothes over and over again! Seriously, we both have been wearing the same hoodies since 2009!

It was time to freshen up some of our most comfortable, but old shirts with a quick dip in dye!

We chose a thermal that was the casualty of a laundry disaster and one of our favorite summer shirts that had gotten distressed and dull over time.

Supplies:

  • Wardrobe Item to Upcycle

  • Rit All-Purpose Liquid Dye (Denim Blue & Wine)

  • Plastic Tub or Bucket

  • Salt for Cotton, Rayon and Linen Fabrics (White Vinegar for Silk and Nylon Fabrics)

  • Liquid Dish Detergent

  • Rubber Gloves

  • Plastic Table Cover

  • Spoon or something to stir with

  • Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative

The process is really easy and everything is explained very clearly on the packaging. Before you start, make sure you purchase the right dye for the right fabric!

How to:

  1. Gather supplies and cover work space.

  2. Prepare dyebath. Fill large plastic tub or bucket with very hot tap water. Shake dye bottles before pouring. Wearing rubber gloves, add dye to water; stir well.

  3. Add salt and dish detergent. Add 1 cup of salt to dyebath. (This will helps to intensify the color.) Then add a squirt of liquid dish detergent. Stir well.

  4. Dip in dyebath. Stir constantly for 10-30 minutes or until desired color is achieved. Stirring helps to ensure an even color.

  5. Prepare ColorStay bath. While soaking, prepare another tub or bucket with tap water and the ColorStay Dye Fixative.

  6. Remove item from dye bath and wring out any excess water.

  7. Immidetaly put the item in the ColorStay Dye Fixative bath and stir frequently for 20 minutes. This will help enhance the color and reduce color bleeding.

  8. Rinse item under cold running water until water begins to run clear.

  9. Hand wash and dry. (It’s a good idea to only wash with like colors the first few times around…just in case!)
