Quick Stenciled Wooden Bowl for Beginners

by Crafty Lumberjacks

We’re the type of people who always try to start things from scratch, meaning if we want to make a print we’d try to make our own stamp or stencil.

We’ve been holding onto this rustic wooden bowl but never use it. Our thought is-if we give it a little TLC, we’ll get more use out of it! We’re keeling it easy with the gift of pre-made stencils! We using Martha Stewart adhesive stencils because well duh, it’s Martha and her stencils are really adorable.

There’s something a little nerve racking about stenciling. It feels very permanent, if you mess up, you’ve messed up!

We like to go into the whole process realizing no matter how careful and delicate we are, it will never turn out 100% perfect.

But that’s actually we we like about stenciling, it has an old school handmade feel to it.

Here’s some tips that we like to keep in mind when we stencil:

  • Stenciling is a dry brush technique. Use as little paint as possible. Too much paint will cause bleeding.

  • Cut off any excess pieces of stencil that you think will get in your way or trip you up.

  • Use a stencil brush and paint in a dabbing or swirling motion.

  • When carefully removing the stencil, pray to the God’s!

We added a little bling by using our finger to rub some gold metallic acrylic paint on the rim of the bowl! (Also from Auntie Martha).

The porcupine reminded us of our cat, so naturally we chose it!
