The hills are alive with the sound of music! Mountain pillows have been on our craft to-do list for the longest time and they are truly one of our favorite things!
We recently got a new sewing machine and we knew pillows would be a great first project! With a few simple cuts and stitches, these mountain pillows are great for moderate beginners!

Fabric (Small pillow-16’’x20’’, Large 24’’x28’’)
-
White Felt
-
Fabric Scissors
-
Corresponding Thread
-
Iron
-
Sewing Pins
-
Zippers

Pillow Stuffing

How To
Cut and Prep Materials
-
Cut and iron 2 pieces of fabric into equal sizes so that the two sides match up once they are sewn together.
-
Cut jagged edges for the snow our of the felt.
Sew on Snow
-
Pin felt to the top of a triangle and sew the bottom with white thread about ⅛ inch from the felt edge. Repeat and sew on other fabric.
Prep Zipper Closure
-
Pin bottom sides together with the back of the mountain to the front.
-
Switch out thread in machine to match pillow.
-
Center the zipper along the bottom of the pillow and make a mark just outside the metal stopper on the pull and on the opposite end.
-
Straight stitch ½ from the bottom edge of the mountain and sew until you get to the first mark and finish with a backstitch.
-
Change the setting on your machine and sew with a basting stitch or the longest stitch available until the second mark.
-
Change the stitch, backstitch and sew until the end of the opposite corner of the pillow.
Add Zipper Closure
-
Change to zipper foot on the machine.
-
Press the seam open with an iron and lay the zipper, pull side down, with the teeth right in the seem and pin into place leaving the zipper totally shut.
-
Sew down one side of it until you’re a couple inches from the zipper pull, backstitching at the start.
-
Stop sewing with the needle down in the fabric. Raise the presser foot and unzip the zipper past the foot. Lower the presser foot.
-
Continue sewing until you hit the line you sewed across the end of the zipper and backstitch again.
-
Close the zipper again.
-
Backstitch and then sew down the other side until you can’t really go any further due to the zipper pull. Backstitch.
-
Remove the fabric from the machine and careful rip with seam ripper revealing the zipper.
Finish
-
Pin right sides together with the back of the mountain to the front.
-
Stitch remaining sides around the mountain with ½ inch seam allowance.
-
Cut corners and trim seam allowance.
-
Turn pillow right-side out, using a sharp tool to push out the peak and corners nicely.
-
Fill with stuffing and get cozy!
Not bad for our first go with our new sewing machine!
