DIY Wood Veneer Art

by Crafty Lumberjacks

We’ve been trying to stay conscience of not letting any of our scrap materials go to waste. We love a trip to Michaels and sometimes it’s just easier to go and by stuff than to actually look for them…we know this about ourselves, and yet we keep all our scraps. What does that say about us?

We were approached by Varathane to work on a wood project that involved some of their stains. Which was perfect because we’ve been dying to use our wood veneer scraps from our ottoman turned coffee table makeover we did with HGTV Handmade.

We wanted to feature their beautiful stains, so we created an easy multi-colored piece of art!

How to:

  • With a heavy duty pair scissors or a craft blade cut wood veneer strips into smaller pieces to stain.

  • Lightly sand down veneers and the wood base board.

  • Stain veneer pieces using a sponge brush.

  • Wipe off stain with an old rag or t-shirt and let dry. Tip: The longer the stain is left on, the darker it will be.

  • Cut down veneers into smaller pieces and start to map out how you want your design. Tip: Lay objects (like scissors) to help keep veneers flat and in place while figuring out your design. Take pictures of your design ideas to use as a reference.

  • One at a time, iron each veneer piece. Tip: Iron on top of a piece of parchment paper to keep your iron clean and stain free.

  • Cut off extra hanging pieces of veneer.

  • Add a coat of polyurethane with a nice bristle brush to help seal the deal! Tip: To get the smoothest finish don’t over brush.

I love this idea! I had always thought of veneer as a super complex project but this seems achievable. I can think of so many ways to individualize this project.
