Pride started as a riot, turned into a parade march and is back to a riot! It’s important that we remember what Pride is all about. Change, acceptance and equality! We have a long way to go for true equality, but we are all fired up to make that change happen!
Miniature Pride Float by dendrew43
Traditional Pride is cancelled this year- VICE asked us to join 10 other Queer artists and create a mini pride float to help celebrate at home this year. “11 Tiny Pride Floats To Help you Celebrate This Year”.
Our float is a big Pride celebration! We wanted to throw it back to NYC queer nightlife which lead to the birth of the Disco era! At our disco party, everyone is welcome to cut loose, boogie, celebrate and be who you are… on or off the dance floor! As one of our favorite Pride anthems says, ‘We are family!’”
The base of our float is brown and black, because the LGBTQA+ movement was started by black trans women and we as a family stand on their shoulders.
How we made it:
Our process for this was really organic and because of that we don’t have a lot of progress pictures. We blasted disco music and let the materials take us! But here’s the gist of how we made it! The buildings, the lettering, the record was all cut out with our Cricut Maker. We wanted to keep it simple and clean, but have a lot of repetition with different colors, thank you Cricut for doing all the tedious work!
The base was made out of foam board that we turned into a box. It’s lined with glitter foam.
Under the record is a LED spinner (that actually spins) and the record is a cut piece of bass wood with colorful cardstock laid on top of each other.
The disco ball was a miniature ornament placed on a cocktail stirrer.
Make your own:
VICE is taking submissions – “These 11 floats are only the beginning. We’d like to invite you to create your own mini Pride float this month, using whatever artistry and feeling you can muster, and whatever supplies you have on hand around the house. From there, you can simply appreciate your own work, or you can send us a photo of your creation to join in the official parade, which will happen on VICE and our social media channels at the end of June. We can’t wait to see what you make.”
Get creative and make your own float and spread the love!!
