We picked up this plain skull at the craft store for a few bucks and thought he could use a bit more (after) life!

Perform a lobotomy – Cut out a circle at the top of the skull using a wood burner with a plastic cutter tool. Work in a well ventilated area and wear a mask! It get’s stinky! (Check to see if the plant fits in the whole, if not keep cutting away.)

Paint using a layering technique – Start painting the nooks and cracks in the skull lightly with vibrant colors. Then lightly go over those same spots with darker colors. (We started with a bright purple and green, then went over it with a gray and black).

With a thin brush, add highlights of gold for a little bling!

Prep the eyes Paint the inside of two large wooden beads black for the pupils. Once dry paint the outside white and add an iris by paining a thin ring around the outside of the hole.

Make them bloodshot- Cut 5 inch pieces of embroidery thread. Add a coat of glossy Mod Podge to one bead with a paintbrush letting it get tacky for about a minute. Pull apart each strand of embroidery thread twisting it into smaller strands and place the strands on the beads. Add Mod Podge on top and manipulate the threads so they look mangled.

Glue on the peepers Hot glue one of the beads to the socket of the skull. Then hot glue the tail of the embroidery thread to the other socket to create a hanging eyeball. Use a pair of tweezers and scissors to manipulate the thread to look mangled and gross. Tip: Adding a bit of Mod Podge to the thread will give it a glazed wet look.

Totally gnarly!

Add your plant and…it’s shooooowtime!!! (He’s giving us a Beetlejuice vibe.)
