Craft a Spooky Handmade Card with Embroidery Floss and a Vintage Touch!
September is National Sewing Month, but who says you need to sew to celebrate? Get in the crafty spirit with this no-sew Halloween greeting card DIY that’s both spooky and stylish. Learn how to create delicate spider webs using embroidery floss—no stitching required!
We’ll also show you how to give your project an aged, vintage look with a deckled edge paper technique. Whether you’re decorating or sending Halloween cheer, this handmade card is frightfully fun to make.
Cut watercolor paper to 6×6 inches using your trim and score board.
Score a ½-inch border on each side.
To create a deckled edge, press down with your metal ruler along the scored line. Start at one corner and slowly tear the paper along the edge. Repeat for all four sides until you have a 5×5-inch square with rough, aged edges.
Step 2: Create the Spider Web Spokes
Place your paper on the cutting mat.
Use a thumb tack to poke 8 holes around the square. Start from one corner, go directly across, then rotate and repeat to form an “X” and a “+”.
Thread a needle with black embroidery floss.
Start from the back, push the needle through a hole, go across, and pull tight.
Tape the end to the back. Continue crisscrossing until all 8 lines are connected like a starburst.
Tie the center of the spokes together using three strands of embroidery floss.
Step 3: Weave the Spider Web
Split your floss into three strands.
Tie the thread at the outer edge of one spoke.
Begin weaving: Go under, around, then back under each spoke, pulling tight as you move inward in a circular pattern.
Add a small dab of glue the areas where you weave on the spoke to help keep things in place as you go.
Continue weaving until you reach the center.
💡 Tip: Don’t stress about perfection! Uneven lines and asymmetry make your web look creepier. The messier, the better!
🕷️ Assemble Your Halloween Card
Step 4: Make the Card Base
Cut a 12×12 black cardstock sheet in half.
Score and fold it to create a 6×6-inch card.
Step 5: Put it Together
Glue your finished 5×5-inch spider web square to the front center of the card.
For the inside, add another deckled-edge 5×5-inch watercolor square for writing your message.
Step 6: Add Final Touches
Glue a plastic spider onto the front of the card for extra spookiness.
Write a fun Halloween message like “Hang in there!” or “Creep it Real!” or keep it classic like we did!
