by Crafty Lumberjacks

Welcome in spring with this colorful and stunning wildflower bouquet. Learn how to make these beautiful crepe paper poppies and add them into your faux floral arrangements.  In this class you’ll learn tips and tricks on how to make these large poppies and how to properly cut and arrange faux spring stems to create a beautiful arrangement perfect for Mother’s Day, a baby shower or to add some color into your home!

In this project we are working with crepe paper. Tissue paper will also work, but crepe paper adds a beautiful texture and it can also stretch, be manipulated and hold it’s shape…which is perfect for a project like this!

How To:

Add wire to styrofoam ball and cover:

With your needle-nose pliers, bend the end of your floral wire to create a very tight loop. Push the looped end into the styrofoam ball. Bending the wire into a loop will help the wire stay securely inside the ball. Take a green piece of crepe paper, stretch it our and cover the ball. Use hot glue to hold it in place. Take a permanent black marker and draw intersecting lines on top of the covered ball.

Cut out the stamen and glue:

The stamen is the polin producing part of the flower…you know, those little antennas inside the flower. Cut a strip of the crepe paper about 6”x2” long. Hold the strip horizontally and starting from the top use the fringe scissors to cut fringe. Wrap the fringe around the base of the ball and hot glue in place.

Cut out the petals:

On a piece of cardstock draw the shape of a wide tear drop. Each petal should be about 4 inches long. Cut out the template and place it on top of the crepe paper (making sure the grain of the crepe paper is vertical) and cut it out. Each flower needs at least five petals.

Glue the Petals:

Carefully, stretch out the crepe paper towards the top of the petal. This will make the petal larger and also give it a more realistic look. Add a drop of hot glue to the bottom of the petal and glue it to the base of the ball. Repeat this action until all your petals are in place.

Tips on how to create your arrangement:

  1. These flowers are stunning on their own, but look even better mixed in with faux florals.
  2. Cut down the floral foam with a hand saw…this is the cleanest way.
  3. Keep the floral foam just slightly bigger than the inside of your vase and push it inside. This keeps the arrangement snug and arrangement doesn’t rock back and forth.
  4. Cut down your floral stems using the wire cutters. Please don’t use a regular pair of scissors for this part! You will damage them and that would be sad. 🙂
  5. Before starting to arrange your stems, group them into piles of each other so you know what you’re working with and you can evenly disperse them.
  6. Add your larger florals first.
  7. Start in the middle and work your way out.
